New Zealand and Tahiti qualify for U-20 World Cup

New Zealand and Tahiti have secured Oceania’s two berths for next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup™. The Junior All Whites proved far too strong for New Caledonia, while Tahiti downed the Solomon Islands in the semi-finals of the ongoing OFC U-19 Men’s Championship to book their passage to Azerbaijan/Uzbekistan 2027.

It will be New Zealand’s ninth outing at the global youth showcase and a third for Tahiti after previous appearances in 2009 and 2019.

Solomon Islands 1-2 Tahiti

In the day’s first semi-final in Apia, a lively opening half saw both teams spurn close-range efforts, with Solomon Islands’ Kennedy Sihiu blazing over the bar early on and then Tahitian defender Kali Lenoir doing likewise just after the half-hour.

Injury forced the Solomons’ keeper Jaron Faiga off late in the opening stanza and his replacement, Peter Mautoa, could do little to stop Tahiti’s opener as Bradley Ruiz lasered home from an indirect free-kick from inside the box.

The impressive winger Keahinui Brown then created Tahiti’s second as he raced clear down the right and crossed for Herehei Teaha to slide home in the 78th minute.

Sihiu scored a stunning 25-yard consolation in stoppage time but it was Tahiti that hung on to secure their place at Azerbaijan/Uzbekistan 2027.

New Zealand were on top early and never let up as the Oceania heavyweights proved far too strong for New Caledonia. Their opener was a wonderful 11-pass movement that ended with a perfectly weighted defence-splitter from Aaron Cartwright that found a spinning Harley Hill, who fired past Raphael Genton.

Their second was just as impressive, with Cartwright again involved as he exchanged passes with Bailey Ferguson, who released captain Alex Lienard to score from an identical position to the opener.

Ferguson grabbed a second assist and Hill a second goal as they combined to make it 3-0 shortly after the restart before Hill turned provider, crossing for Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues to tap in from close range.

Substitute Nathan Martin scored a fifth shortly after his second half introduction before a Maurice Katrawa penalty got New Caledonia on the scoresheet with 20 minutes remaining.

Deep into stoppage time Oliver Grosso scored for the fourth straight match to round out the comfortable 6-1 win and cap another wonderful display from the Junior All Whites.
