Argentina advance dramatically, Brazil and Poland stay perfect

Argentina rallied late to down Mexico and reach the knockout phase, while Zuzanna Grzywinska hit a hat-trick as Poland overwhelmed Benin to win their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup™ group. Brazil also swaggered through on maximum points thanks to a last-gasp Gisele golazo, though a 2-1 loss was sufficient to advance England. Canada, who thrashed Tanzania 6-0, now face an anxious wait to see if they will progress as one of the best third-placed teams, but Benin and Mexico are out.

Group B

England 1-2 Brazil

A late Gisele stunner saw Brazil top Group B and left England sweating, with the Young Lionesses eventually securing second spot over Canada by virtue of their superior team conduct score.

The pair initially cancelled each out, with the first chance of the game taking until just past the hour half to arrive. Lola Brown and Rachel Maltby combined well down the left, with the latter crossing to the back post for Dent to side-foot home.

Brazil came out swinging after the restart and eventually levelled when Brendha spun Chloe Hylton inside the area before being brought down. Clarinha stepped up and confidently sent her spot-kick into the top-right corner. That looked to be the end of the action until Gisele played a neat one-two with Evelin down the left, skipped into the England area and sent a ferocious low drive in from an acute angle.

Annabelle Chukwu scored a brilliant brace as Canada kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages with a dominant display in rainy conditions against Tanzania, who are now eliminated.

The Canucks took an early lead when Tanzania defender Ester Masek deflected the ball into her own net. They started the second half with a bang, scoring twice in five minutes. Olivia Chisholm fired in a long-range rocket, which is sure to be a contender for Goal of the Tournament. Shortly afterwards, Chukwu netted her second of the showpiece from close range.

With 50 students from a local Canadian school in Katowice cheering the team on, Chukwu made it four with a powerful effort before Kaylee Hunter and Liana Tarasco sealed the rout late on. Canada will now hope four points will be enough to see them through as one of the six-best third-placed sides.

Benin 1-4 Poland

Marcin Kasprowicz’s side made light work of Benin in Bielsko-Biala. Grzywinska scrambled home the opener following a Zofia Pagowska corner, before a wonderful team goal got the fans on their feet. Krystyna Flis’ quarterback pass set Grzywinska racing down the right, and the latter’s inch-perfect cut across goal was turned in by Wyrwas. Benin came out fighting, and the reflexes of goalkeeper Hanna Wieczerzak were required to deny Gandonou and Yasminath Djibril, but Poland swiftly regained control. Grzywinska got the third after Zuzanna Witek’s spectacular strike had rattled the crossbar, and the Nurnberg forward completed her treble with a stylish finish following Inez Sikora’s canny pass. Gandonou got a consolation for Ouzerou Abdoulaye’s Africans with a glorious free-kick.

Argentina 3-2 Mexico

Argentina went through in thrilling fashion, with an injury-time strike from Dolo Delgado securing a dramatic comeback victory over Mexico. The South Americans’ place in the Round of 16 looked in real danger after Deiry Ramirez scored a brilliant brace for Mexico. Argentina fought back from a 2-1 deficit, however, first through an Alma Velasco Heim leveller and then Delgado’s late strike to seal second place in the group. Annika Paz had given Argentina the lead with a brilliant flying header to move to the top of the adidas Golden Boot standings on five goals. Ramirez equalised through an outstanding long-distance curler, and then gave Mexico the lead with a downward header after Alico Soto acrobatically directed the ball into the Argentina area. Velasco Heim fired in the ball through a sea of legs after her initial free-kick was blocked, before Delgado had the final word deep into injury time to leave Argentina elated and Mexico eliminated.
