Magic World Cup 2026 moments: Egypt end 92-year wait
Mohamed Salah was on target as the Pharaohs beat New Zealand 3-1 to record their maiden victory at the global finals.
The biggest FIFA World Cup™ in history produced pulsating matches, spectacular goals and record-breaking performances. Here, we reflect on the most memorable moments from the greatest show on earth.
Egypt arrived in North America with their sights fixed on making history. It had been 92 years since the Pharaohs made their World Cup debut at Italy 1934, but they were still hunting a first win at the global finals.
Mohamed Salah and Co were on track to achieve that elusive victory in their opening game at the 2026 edition. They led 1-0 after an hour of their opening game against Belgium in Seattle, but a Red Devils equaliser meant the streak went on.
Six days later, Egypt had another opportunity to break their duck. New Zealand were their opponents in Vancouver, and this time the Pharaohs trailed 1-0 at half-time. A stirring second-half comeback, however, would see the African nation emerge triumphant, with Mostafa Zico, Salah and Trezeguet the goalscoring heroes. Egypt’s near century-long wait was finally over.
