David Villa
Spain v Honduras South Africa 2010 | Group Stage Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg
When David Villa received a crossfield pass by Gerard Pique, Honduras were in a good defensive shape. They had nine players behind the ball, outnumbering four advanced Spaniards, while Amado Guevara and Sergio Mendoza doubled up on the Barcelona man. It mattered not.
Spain's supersonic striker darted towards the pair, sidestepped Mendoza before powering beyond Guevara in one swift movement. Osman Chavez looked to have done enough but he merely slowed El Guaje, who cut inside and, while slipping, thundered an effort which Noel Valladares could only get a fingertip to.
Villa scored another in the second half, and while he missed a late penalty, his goals were crucial in turning Spain's tournament around. They recovered from their opening-day loss to Switzerland to win six straight, including the Soccer City showpiece versus the Netherlands, as La Roja toasted their maiden World Cup success.
